Mortlake's Housing, and What It Asks of an Electrician

This place was a gasworks village, and the wiring still remembers it.

Before 1940 it grew as a working-class settlement around the AGL works, on a small bend of land the river wraps almost all the way around. Double-brick cottages, built for gas company families.

Then the works closed. From the 1990s, townhouses and unit blocks went up over the site, right down to the water.

What is left is a genuinely odd mix: pre-war cottages and modern apartments, sometimes on the same street. Double brick one side of a fence, render the next, and a long stretch of years in between.

The cottages are the electrical problem. The ones that were kept commonly still carry old ceramic-fuse switchboards, well overdue for replacement. A fuse board on a house that has since gained a kitchen, a laundry and heating is a board being asked to do a job it was never given.

And they are being renovated, steadily. Turning those cottages into modern homes keeps exposing dated wiring that needs a full rewire, because you cannot hang a modern kitchen off cabling from the gasworks era.

The gasworks were not even the whole of it. Green Point, out on the river, was a naval boatyard in the Second World War, turning out Fairmile motor launches.

Walk Tennyson Road past the Palace Hotel and the shops, then down Hilly Street to the nature playground at Wangal Reserve, where the punt crosses. You pass both centuries in about ten minutes.

There is a working strip in the middle of it too. The Tennyson Road shops carry the cafes, the medical practices and the services, and small commercial work there runs to its own hours and its own access.

Our answer in the houses is usually the same one: a modern board first, then whatever the walls are hiding.

Our Electrical Services in Mortlake

Six jobs cover nearly all of it. The split between old cottages and new units means the van carries gear for both, every trip.

Switchboard upgrades lead the list. The ceramic fuses go, breakers and RCDs take their place, and the new board leaves headroom for later.

Residential electrical handles everything past the board. Rewires, added circuits, outlets, and faults that have been quietly building for decades.

EV charger installation is growing fast around the newer stock, where the charger is the easy half and the supply is the real question.

Light installation covers downlights, LED changeovers and garden lighting. We fit quality gear, not the cheapest thing on the shelf.

Level 2 electrician work is the network side: service lines, consumer mains, metering, point of attachment. We are accredited to do it. On the river-facing streets the air carries salt off the water, so external enclosures get specified to sit in it rather than rust in it.

Emergency electrician work when the power dies, the switchgear runs hot, or something starts to smell. After hours included.

What Goes Wrong in Mortlake Homes

Two faults come through more than anything else, and they sit at opposite ends of the suburb's history.

  • Old boards mixed in among new stock. The older houses sitting between the apartment blocks routinely need a switchboard upgrade and safety switches simply to meet current standards. It is steady work here, and it starts at the board.
  • EV circuits added to an existing supply. Households in the newer stock increasingly want a charger put in on the supply they already have. That is the catch. A charger is a serious continuous load, and whether your supply carries it is a question to answer before you buy the car, not after.

Emergency

Emergency Help, Minutes from Mortlake

Ring (02) 9134 9026. Whatever is doing it, stop using it, and leave the investigating to us.

The newer units and townhouses lean hard on reverse-cycle heating through winter, and that demand lands on the board along with everything else.

  • Burning smells, scorching or melted plastic at a socket
  • A board or switch that is hot to touch
  • Arcing, crackling or a buzz you can hear
  • Power gone from some rooms but not others
  • Any fitting the water has got into

Switch the circuit off at the board if you can get to it safely. After that it wants a licensed electrician, which is what our emergency electrician line is for.

Why Riverfront Homes Choose Us

The river makes this feel further away than it is. It is not: we are a short run around, we come through most weeks, and the punt still runs from Hilly Street across to the far bank.

Being close matters most on the small stuff. Nobody sends a van an hour for one power point, which is how a small fault turns into a long wait.

Most people here are in units or townhouses, and the roads out are a bus to Ashfield or a short drive to the M4. Neither is much use when you want a sparkie this week.

We know both halves of this housing, the old gasworks-era stock and the new builds. Clipsal and Hager switchgear goes in either way.

You get a Certificate of Compliance for electrical work on every job, and this suburb sits in the City of Canada Bay, which we cover the same as anywhere else.

How We Work, From Call to Certificate

  1. The call. Someone picks up, listens to the symptom, and works out whether this is urgent or a booking. No queue, no call centre.
  2. The look. We find the cause before we price it, then hand you a fixed written price before we start. Nothing proceeds until you have agreed to it.
  3. The work. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy. If the job turns up something nobody expected, we stop and tell you before carrying on.
  4. The certificate. Everything is tested before we sign off. Your Certificate of Compliance follows, and anything notifiable is lodged with NSW Fair Trading.

Common questions

Mortlake Electrician FAQs

Six things worth knowing before you ring.

Do you actually service the peninsula?

We do, regularly. You are on the regular run and the drive is short, so reaching you is rarely the hard part. Ring (02) 9134 9026 and we will find you a time.

Why do the older cottages here trip safety switches?

Because the safety switch is doing its job. Once an RCD goes onto wiring that has been in a wall since before 1940, it starts picking up leakage that was there all along. A perished cable, a damp outdoor fitting or one failing appliance is usually behind it, and finding which is a half-hour job for someone with the right tester.

Do you do small jobs?

Gladly. A single power point, a dead light, one downlight that flickers. Small jobs are worth doing when the drive is five minutes, and you still get the same certificate and the same guarantee as a full board changeover. Plenty of our work here starts as one small thing somebody had put off.

Can you handle a full renovation rewire?

Yes, and it is common in the old cottages here once someone takes the linings off. We can do it in a single hit, or break it into stages so you can keep living there. Either way you get a fixed written price before we start.

Do you install EV chargers?

Regularly, in the townhouses and units especially. The first question is always how much your supply can actually carry, because adding a charger to a board already near its limit means sorting the supply first. We check that before quoting.

What is your workmanship guarantee?

Lifetime on our workmanship, plus a 12-month product warranty on the gear we install. If our work ever lets you down, we come back and fix it at no cost.
